Link baiting
Link baiting is anything on your website which encourages other webmaster to link to your site one hence increasing your back links. To link bait the most important thing to do is have great content then say on your index page give a script away with your link in it or have a small advert image with your link and say "Hey link to Us". Although you have no control over link baiting it can't help to try.
Back links and strategies
Now back links by far the most important way to move your website up in the search engine results page (SERP's). best methods are simple. Add your website to free directories yes including dmoz. Never ever pay for links off directories. Swap links and affiliate with other websites in the same category. Post comments of Do-follow blogs. Use social book-marking website to increase your traffic and link to you. Put your website address in forum posts on do-follow forums. Keyword selection and optimisation
Now this is not for the faint hearted and is very hard to do correctly. You must use keyword selection tools try Wordtracker.com you do have to pay but you can use the free try tool. Please don't go for just a single keyword. Your aim should always be to use long tail keywords with high traffic and low competitiveness which of course all depends on how strong your website is the serp's against other site. After selecting your long tail keyword try it out for a few months if you don't see improvements move to another long tail keyword. Soon you will find the right keyword for your website.
On page content Keywords
Remember to use your optimized keywords thought your page. Now there is something called keyword stuffing which will get your pages punished by Google and here is a simple trick to make sure that doesn't happen. If you go though and read your article or post and it doesn't make sense because you have stuffed it with hundreds of keywords then you will get punished.
XML - Sitemaps
Sitemaps are very important if Google or another search engine can't see all of your pages then you will get no traffic. Sign up to Google webmasters central www.google.com/webmasters and submit your site map. Also it is important to submit to yahoo and other search engines.
