Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - For Beginners by stefano

What is SEO, SEO is search engine optimization, yes but what does that mean? Well in real terms it means strategically moving your website from the bottom of the search engine list to the top.

An SEO Example:

You have a website about "website hosting" and people want to find you, they go to Google or any other large search engine and type in "website hosting". Problem is they can't find you, millions of other WebPages come up before yours and you get no traffic and no traffic means no business. What's the solution? SEO. SEO combines series of techniques to help your website move from the bottom on the lists on search engines to the top of the list.

Now I know what SEO is how can I implement it?

Just before I show you how to implement SEO you must know a little more. There are two types of SEO. Black hat SEO and white Hat SEO

Black hat SEO refers to manipulating a search engines results to better rank, but using "illegal" techniques which eventually will get you banned from a search engines such as Google, Yahoo, msn and other smaller engines.

White Hat SEO - Always use white hat SEO because this is a sure fire way of getting better organic (natural) results. I'm going to show you some basic techniques to help improve your search engine rankings, all white hat techniques...

TOP 5 beginner SEO techniques

01. Off Page - Back Linking.

Off page SEO is all about generating back links to your website. What are back links? Back links are in search engines algorithms. The more quality back links you have to your site the better ranking you will have on search engines. Back links are only good when they are relevant to your sites content. Also if you pay for back links you will get penalized by mainly Google.

An example of off page SEO

If I have two websites which are exactly the same in everyway except one website has 30 back links and the other has none. The website with the back links will always be ranked higher.

02. Website Tittles

If you look at the top of your browser now you will see the tittle of my website. Website tittles are very important it is suggested you do some keyword research so select a low or non competitive long tail keyword if your website is new.

Here is how to write a good and a bad tittle.

"I sell websites" is not a good tittle it is not specific and doesn't tell me much other than you want to sell me a website.

Try "Cheap Websites for sale Sydney Australia". Why is the second title better? It is better because it tell the user what your selling and where specifically and that its going to be cheaper than the market average. You will have more success with long tail keywords (a long tail key word is a more specific keyword bringing better traffic to your website.

03. Website Domain Names

Domain Names are less important now however could still give you a competitive edge. Having keywords in your domain name is always a good idea.

A Domain Name example:

If your writing a blog about "web designers" and your about to buy your web hosting and domain name. Do not get a domain name like "awesomeblog.com" This domain name tells the user nothing about what your doing or selling. Try to aim for "bestwebdesignersblog.com"

This domain name tells the user what you do and what your writing a blog about. Also keywords are used in the name which will boots your SEO efforts. Also note that using acronyms in your domain name unless relevant to your website brading will not help.

04. Writing Content

Well by far the most affective way to improve your search engine rankings is by having great content. (This isn't SEO I just thought you might want to know).

A successful website will always have unique content which is relevant to the target market. It's so a guarantee that users will come back if they like what they see.

05. Key words in your URL

Before I spoke about keywords in the domain name this is quite similar Putting keywords in the URL of your pages is a great way to explain to the user and more importantly the search engines what your page is about

Having a page like www.addresswebhosting.com/new-fast-webhost.html is the best way to show a search engine what your about and it boots the amount of keywords on the page.

Having a URL like this www.addresswebhosting.com/page1.html is bad for SEO because it doesn't tell the user or the search engine what it's about by looking at it.

Extra Meta Tags

Now you might have noticed I did not motion Meta tags here. That is because meta tags are not so relevant anymore however still useful they really don't drastically help SEO efforts.
